Steve Liddle, founding partner of Liddle Sheets P.C., has been on the forefront of environmental and class action litigation for more than 30 years. For these efforts, he has been named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s “Lawyers of the Year” and Crain’s Detroit Business’s “40 Under 40.”

Early in his career, Steve successfully represented a group of residents whose homes backed up to a canal in Detroit’s lower east side. Sewage had been discharged into the canal for more than 60 years, and previous attempts to fix the problem had gone nowhere. As a result of Steve’s representation, the group obtained a settlement that included $3.8 million dollars and the installation of a $25 million sewage system to stop the discharges. Today, Steve continues his work to fix big problems and obtain compensation for those who have been harmed.

In the 2000s it became apparent that both local governmental agencies and their insurance companies were seeking a new law that would impose governmental immunity or make it impossible to sue for a sewage backup.  Instead of accepting this result, Steve used the fact that he represented thousands of homeowners and lobbied for a law allowing homeowners to sue their government for the invasion of private property.  This led to the enactment of MCL 691.1406, et seq. The fact that this law was enacted over the objection of big money special interests shows the power of class actions in that when “the people” join together, as in a class action, justice is possible, even against the biggest special interests.

Steve has served as an adjunct professor at Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law where he taught a class on class actions and complex litigation.

Steve has served as class counsel in nearly 200 class actions in over 25 states and has helped individuals recover 100s of millions of dollars and forced 100s of corporate defendants to cease illegal behavior
